For your consideration is this utterly fabulous antique Cup of Knowledge fortune telling tea cup and saucer, dating to approximately 1930. Manufactured by Alfred Meakin pottery of England in the marigold design. Both the cup and saucer retain their original maker’s marks on the underside.
The interior of the cup is decorated with images of playing cards, allowing the user to combine the arts of cartomancy (fortune telling with cards) and tasseomancy (tea leaf reading). As the tea leaves settle within the cup, the surrounding playing card symbols provide additional layers of meaning and insight, creating a unique divination experience. These fascinating fortune telling cups blended two popular methods of fortune telling and were highly fashionable during the early 20th century.
This is a genuine antique example, not a modern reproduction. The cup and saucer are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs noted. The transfer designs remain beautifully preserved, making this a wonderful addition to any tea cup collection, curiosity cabinet, Victorian décor display, or fortune telling collection.
